COURSES

In Greece, he has taught Cinema Theory, Theatre Directing and Acting at the Drama School of the State Theatre of Northern Greece, at the Drama Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Peloponnese.

In the Drama Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki teaches cinema theory and play from 2000 and theatre play from 2009. His courses are focused in a comparative approach of art of playing in the two different expressive codes: acting in the cinema and playing in the theatre. During the course the students are also working on scenes from cinematographic films and process and examine the techniques of playing.

From 2012 as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor in the department of Theatre Studies of the School of Fine Arts of the University of the Peloponnese, Yannis Leontaris teaches Theatre Directing and Acting. During those courses/workshops of playing, is proposed a combination between elements of the “viewpoints” method by Anne Bogart concerning the physical presence of actor and meticulous treatment of theatrical text via his deconstruction in words, sounds, punctuation.

Artistic Activity


He worked as a film director from 1987 to 2004. His films have been awarded with the National Award for Best Short Film (1994, 1996) and the National Award for the Best Documentary Film (2002). Since 2004 he directs for the theatre. He is a founding member of the theatre group “Kanigunda Theatre Company”. From 2005 to 2017 he has directed varius theatre pieces and has translated verious texts in Greek. He has collaborated with the National Theatre, the National Theatre of Northern Greece, Onassis Cultural Center, Athens Festival, Theatro tou Notou, “Karolos Koun” Theatre and Peiramatiki Skini tis “Technis”. He has also collaborated with international theatre institutions and festivals such as Festival Avignon OFF, Festival Chantiers d’Europe (Paris), Heidelberger Stuckemarkt Festival and Between the Seas Festival (New York). He has directed texts by Hoffmanstahl, Shakespeare, Bulgakov, Viripaev, Pommerat and others.
