The Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese was established in 2003 (Presidential Decree 118/2003) and has been operating since the academic year 2003–2004. It belongs to the School of Fine Arts and is based in the city of Nafplio.

According to Article 1 of Presidential Decree 118 (paragraph 3ζ, Government Gazette 102/A/05.05.2003), the mission of the Department of Theatre Studies is:

a) To cultivate and advance knowledge in the art and science of Theatre Studies, combining theatrical practice with theoretical reflection, literary analysis, and scientific methodology;

b) To provide students with the necessary qualifications and competencies which ensure their thorough preparation for academic and professional careers;

c) To organize postgraduate studies leading to the training of scholars and professionals with specialized knowledge in specific fields within the Department’s areas of expertise;

d) To contribute to the study of theatre at an international level.

The undergraduate programme of study is four years in duration and is structured into eight semesters. It comprises a combination of theatre studies and theoretical courses focusing on diverse aspects of theatre and the performing arts. At the same time, it includes a wide range of studio-based and practical courses that examine issues of artistic practice, aiming to equip students with the skills and practical knowledge necessary for directing and producing performance events.

The overall curriculum seeks to enhance the academic and artistic identity of the Department of Theatre Studies through the strengthening of its research activity. More specifically, the Department aims to reinforce its scholarly, artistic, and educational profile through two specializations, established by decision of the 288th meeting of the Senate of the University of the Peloponnese (05.05.2026) and published in Government Gazette 2699/B΄/13.05.2026:

a) Theatre Studies and Interdisciplinary Research

b) Theatre Directing and Stage Arts.
