SCIENTIFIC, ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL EVENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE STUDIES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2023-2024
Since its foundation, the Department of Theatre Studies has demonstrated a rich and multifaceted activity in organising cultural events, as well as local, national and international conferences and seminars. These are held on the initiative of the Department's teaching staff, with the participation of students and in cooperation with local, national and international bodies. Apart from the Department's Research Programmes and International Cooperations, which are listed in specific categories on the website, the main artistic and scientific activities of the Department of Theatre Studies fall into the following categories: Conferences – Symposia, Lectures – Discussions, Seminars – Workshops, Exhibitions – Festivals, Artistic Events – Performances, Educational Programmes and Activities.
More specifically, the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese organises numerous events annually, such as lectures and seminars with renowned Greek and foreign authors, artists and academics, screenings, performances, exhibitions and activities aimed both at the Department's students and at the local community of Nafplio, as well as the general public. Furthermore, as part of the courses offered during undergraduate and postgraduate studies, the Department organises student visits to museums, exhibitions, theatre performances, theatrical venues (e.g., Greek National Opera, National Theatre, Megaron Athens Concert Hall, ancient theatres, archaeological sites, museums), libraries, radio and television stations.
At the same time, our students carry out numerous artistic activities, performances and exhibitions as part of their courses and/or internships, under the guidance and assistance of the teaching staff, as well as artistic events on their own initiative. The activities of the DTS promote international and national scientific and artistic cooperation and contribute dynamically to the cultural life of Argolis, building bridges between the university community and local society, both in Greece and abroad.
 
  • Conference

(03 to 06/07/2024) International Conference | Performing Space 2024. The English-language international conference was organised for the third consecutive year by the Department of Theatre Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Peloponnese from 3 to 6 July 2024, in Nafplio. The co-organising body for the academic year 2023-2024 was the Department of Performing and Digital Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of the Peloponnese. The purpose of the conference was the scientific and artistic exploration of the relationship between performance and space, as well as the creation of an interdisciplinary framework within which participants had the opportunity to present their research and artistic practice, and to exchange views and experiences with reference to performance and significant spaces of the built environment from antiquity to the present day.   • Artistic Events - Festivals - Exhibitions

(05/07/2024) Within the framework of the cooperation between the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese and the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, the promenade site-specific performance entitled "Redefining the change in democracy" was presented on 5 July 2024. The female students who attended the workshop/experiential course "Physical Theatre Techniques IV: The Performer in Open Space" of the Department's Undergraduate Programme of Studies (instructor in charge: Ms A. Vasilakou) were invited to respond to a series of questions on the concepts of HEALTH and DEMOCRACY. They transformed their thoughts into original texts and movement activities, in cooperation with instructor A. Tsichli. The performance was presented in the public courtyard of "Sotiria" Hospital. (12/06/2024) Within the framework of the courses "The Architecture of the Ancient Theatre", taught by Maria Mikedaki, Assistant Professor at the DTS, and "Theatre Pedagogy V: The Psychopedagogy of Theatre Teaching in Education", taught by Dr Dimitris Dimitriadis, Adjunct Lecturer at the DTS, a promenade performance entitled "A dream play for Myrtis at the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus" was organised on 12/06/2024, 11:00-14:00, in cooperation with the "Institute for the Child – Myrtis".   • Τheatre Production Festival

(27-05 to 05-06-2024) Theatre Production Festival with the participation of the students of the Department of Theatre Studies as part of the "Theatre Production" course. This course is taught exclusively at the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese by Anna Tsichli. Technical support was provided by Lampros Skoufoulas. The following performances were presented at the 2024 Theatre Production "Festivalaki":

  • Abelard and Heloise, the Story of Their Misfortunes, Monday, May 27 and Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 21:00, Park Kiosk near the OSE (Railway) Theatre in Nafplio. The performance was based on the play Abelard and Heloise by Yannis Kalavrianos.
  • "Quiet Place Seat 0" presents the performance What is Not Seen, Friday, May 31 at 19:00 and Saturday, June 1 at 14:00, National Gallery–Alexandros Soutsos Museum, Nafplio Annex.
  • trenSpotting (Adapted), based on the novel Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2 at 20:00, Nafplio Municipal Stadium, Gymnastics Hall.

  • Educational Programmes and Activities

Every year, the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese develops a variety of theatre pedagogy activities. These aim to provide theoretical and practical support to students who will be employed in education as drama theorists/theatre pedagogues, while also aiming for the Department's outreach and connection with society. Within this framework, instructor Katerina Kosti, PhD in Theatre Pedagogy, undertakes various cooperations with the assistance of the students participating in the respective courses.
