Course Description

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with contemporary theories and practices of dance and to explore their relationship with the respective historical, social, and geopolitical contexts in which they emerge. Students are encouraged to engage in both theoretical and experiential inquiry in order to develop an understanding of the complexity and potential of the field.

After the successful completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

•    Identify major trends, movements, and key practitioners of contemporary (Western) dance.
•    Approach and analyse a dance “text” through an analytical and interdisciplinary perspective.
•    Recognize and critically engage, both theoretically and practically, with the fundamental elements of dance.
•    Identify, both theoretically and experientially, basic principles of movement analysis and relate them to the theatrical practices studied in the course.
•    Combine techniques and methodological tools related to dance research, creation, and analysis in order to further enrich drama-based teaching approaches and theatre pedagogy practices in Primary and Secondary Education.
