Course Description

The course introduces students to the history of Greek theatre from 1830 to 1920, structured into distinct historical periods, and to the major Greek dramatic works of the same era. It provides an overview of theatrical life while encouraging critical reflection on key issues in Greek theatre history in relation to broader social and intellectual developments. Through dramaturgical analysis, students become familiar with interpretative approaches to dramatic texts and their artistic significance.

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • define and analyse key concepts in theatre theory and history;
  • define basic concepts of history and culture;
  • distinguish between dramatic genres and their characteristics;
  • identify and analyse dramaturgical techniques in dramatic works;
  • organise and present a theatrical work;
  • gain a comprehensive overview of the development of modern Greek theatre in the 19th and early 20th century.
