The course aims to introduce students to the methodology of performance analysis (performance studies) and to provide them with the methodological tools required for the analysis and interpretation of theatrical performances, including both dramatic theatre and contemporary forms of live performance. As case studies, the course examines landmark productions presented on the international stage from the late twentieth century to the present day.
After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• distinguish among different types of performances, as well as identify major trends, movements, and schools of contemporary performance-making;
• investigate the constituent elements and parameters that shape a performance and employ the appropriate methodological tools for its reception and analysis;
• understand and critically engage with contemporary performance practices and productions;
• become familiar with the methodologies of critical and genetic analysis in the Performing Arts.
