Course Description

The course introduces students to Euripidean dramaturgy, satyr drama, and mime theatre of the classical and post-classical periods. It focuses on the study of Euripidean drama, the evolution of tragic and hybrid dramatic forms, and the specific features of satyr play and ancient mime within their historical development.

After the completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify the main characteristics of Euripidean drama;
  • analyse Euripides’ dramaturgical techniques;
  • understand the development of tragedy and tragicomedy/hybrid dramatic forms; 
  • describe the evolution of tragedy into the post-classical period; 
  • analyse the features of satyr drama;
  • compare drama and mime in terms of similarities and differences; 
  • use basic terminology of ancient Greek theatre.
