Course Description

The course aims to develop students’ ability to approach, analyse, understand, interpret, and critically examine major playwrights and selected dramatic works of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe within their historical, social, and cultural contexts. Through the study of representative texts and theatrical movements, students gain insight into the aesthetic principles, performance conventions, and intellectual currents that shaped European theatre during this period.

After the successful completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principal characteristics and developments of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European theatre;
  • Identify and critically interpret major theatrical trends, movements, conventions, and stylistic features of the period;
  • Recognize significant playwrights and their contributions to the development of European drama;
  • Interpret dramatic works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with regard to their themes, style, and performative dimensions;
  • Analyse theatrical texts and practices in relation to the specific historical, political, social, and cultural contexts in which they were produced, performed, and received.
