Course Description

The course introduces students to key topics in modern Greek history (from the 18th century to the mid-20th century). It also aims to train students in a rational mode of thinking and in interpreting issues of modern Greek history through the acquisition of knowledge and critical discussion of the factors that shaped historical developments. Students are expected to understand and consolidate the historical evolution of the Greek world from the period of the Modern Greek Enlightenment to the mid-20th century. They are also encouraged to compare events of similar significance, such as civil conflicts and the role of the Great Powers, and to interpret their causes. The course promotes a critical, objective, and comprehensive understanding of the developments that shaped modern Greek reality. Through the study of sources, students also become aware of their usefulness, subjectivity, and the need for critical engagement.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse and synthesize data and information, including through the use of new technologies;
  • critically approach and interpret historical phenomena.
