Course Description

The course examines major art movements from Romanticism to 1945, including Realism, Impressionism and its evolution into more autonomous expressive forms, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau in its various national manifestations. It also covers Fauvism, German Expressionism (Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter), Cubism, Futurism, the Russian Avant-Garde and Constructivism, Dada, De Stijl, Bauhaus, New Objectivity and Verism, as well as Surrealism.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • to understand the role and dynamics of artistic movements connected to the trends, experiments, and critical reflections that shaped the visual and applied arts in the Western world from the French Revolution to the mid-20th century.
