Course Description

The course aims to introduce students to the most important milestones in the history of European culture, from the Renaissance to the 20th century.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • think in a rational and critical manner; 
  • interpret major milestones in the history of European culture through knowledge acquisition and critical discussion of the factors that shaped them; 
  • understand the historical elements that form the basis of European identity; 
  • recognize key stages in European cultural history (Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment); 
  • identify major cultural regions and cultural boundaries of Europe in relation to political developments; 
  • distinguish the main historical issues of the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • understand the consequences of the opposition between totalitarianism and democracy, as well as capitalism and socialism, in contemporary Europe.
