Course Description

The course is a practical laboratory-based module that requires compulsory attendance, rehearsal work between sessions, and culminates in a public performance. A small group of students completing the directing cycle collaborates on the staging of a classical dramatic text, with each student responsible for directing a scene or a section of the work. The course emphasizes dramaturgical and performance analysis, character study, the conception of scenic space, rehearsal organisation, the creation of conditions for stage action, and the coordination of key production elements such as props, lighting, and costume design. Drawing on knowledge acquired in previous directing, design, and performance-related courses, students are expected to develop a coherent directorial approach to both text and space. Students also collaborate on the production of a collective “performance text” that documents the complete set of directorial proposals for the chosen work. Practical training includes the use of Anne Bogart’s Viewpoints methodology and “verbal actions,” with particular attention to gesture, spatial relationships, spatial composition, and verbal conflict.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of significant stage productions of the selected dramatic work;
  • conduct dramaturgical and performance analysis of scenes and actions;
  • apply Viewpoints methodology in improvisation and staging;
  • use “verbal actions” as a tool for generating performance material;
  • organise rehearsals and apply basic actor training techniques;
  • design and manage scenic space in relation to directorial intent;
  • create and direct performance actions within a collaborative ensemble;
  • contribute to the development of a collective “performance text”;
  • integrate knowledge from previous courses into a coherent directing practice.
