Course Description

This practice-based course focuses on the devising and presentation of embodied performances in public spaces, exploring a field of contemporary theatre situated at the intersection of the performing arts. Emphasizing the creative autonomy of the performer as the dramaturg of their own work, the course combines physical training with artistic research and site-specific performance practice. Drawing on the methods and approaches of influential practitioners and theorists, including Richard Schechner, Susana Bloch, Theodoros Terzopoulos, and Jerzy Grotowski, students develop and realize performance interventions in the public spaces of Nafplio, engaging critically with the relationships between body, audience, and environment.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • apply physical training techniques that support contemporary performance practice;
  • demonstrate enhanced stage presence, spatial awareness, and sensitivity to rhythm and movement dynamics;
  • develop confidence in the practical skills required for embodied and site-specific performance;
  • research, design, document, and present small- and medium-scale public performances;
  • critically reflect on their artistic practice and articulate their dramaturgical and directorial choices;
  • collaborate effectively in creative teams, assuming roles such as performer, dramaturg, coordinator, or production assistant;
  • design performances that promote accessibility, inclusivity, and engagement with diverse audiences.
