Course Description

The course introduces students to actor training and text analysis from the perspectives of both the actor and the director, drawing on the realist traditions of Russian and Anglo-American theatre and working with scenes from classical and contemporary dramatic repertoire. In parallel, it examines issues of pedagogy, ethics, and methodology in actor training and artistic education. The course explores acting techniques alongside critical perspectives on theatre pedagogy, learning theories, and educational epistemologies, with particular attention to inclusive, student-centred, and ethically informed approaches to artistic training. Students are introduced to the design, implementation, and evaluation of acting and training programmes suitable for drama schools, workshops, and educational contexts.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • apply fundamental skills related to acting and directing, including text analysis, observation, concentration, imagination, and character development;
  • understand the principles of realist acting and distinguish them from other performance approaches;
  • respond effectively to collaborative artistic creation;
  • critically examine methodologies of actor training and theatre pedagogy;
  • compare different approaches to actor training through a historical perspective on twentieth-century theatre practice;
  • connect acting pedagogy with learning theories and educational frameworks;
  • design inclusive and student-centred approaches to artistic training;
  • research, plan, implement, and evaluate acting and training programmes in educational and professional contexts.
