The course introduces students to contemporary Francophone theatrical writing from around the world. It focuses on reading, decoding, interpreting, evaluating, and reflecting on modern dramatic and literary texts in French. Students engage with key movements and theoretical approaches shaping Francophone theatre across different geographical and cultural contexts. Central topics include postcolonial writing, feminist writing, aesthetic minimalism, intertextuality, acculturation and assimilation processes, migration narratives, and representations of otherness. The course also aims to foster critical thinking, broaden cultural perspectives, highlight the diversity of Francophone theatrical production, and encourage reflection on contemporary social and cultural issues.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

• interpret contemporary theatrical and literary works by Francophone authors from Western Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, and the Maghreb; 
• recognize key movements and theoretical approaches in Francophone theatre and literature, including postcolonial and feminist writing, intertextuality, migration narratives, and representations of otherness; 
• understand the historical, linguistic, and cultural specificities of Francophone dramatic production; 
• identify the main thematic and stylistic features of different Francophone contexts; 
• develop critical awareness of contemporary theatre and literature in a global context; 
• demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity and multiculturalism; 
• engage in critical and self-critical reflection on contemporary society and culture.
